There have been plenty of games since then that have tried to do something similar, forming a loose new genre that could be called "first-person arena" games. It boiled down the fast-paced action of games from the era of Doom and Quake into a single arena of circle-strafing and endless nightmares. Some demos will also work after the festival is over if they're downloaded ahead of time, so those with less time on their hands this week may want to grab a pile of demos to try in on the days and weeks after the festival ends. However, even if that time has already passed, many games will offer their demo in future events or even leave it up on their page until release. Gamers who want to get in on the hunt for the next indie darling should know that the festival only runs until Wednesday, February 17.
No matter what genres a player enjoys, there's certainly a hidden gem that's worth playing.
Games of all shapes and sizes are available for sampling, including some that have appeared in multiple events and some premiering for the first time. Valve has put on these festivals regularly throughout the last year and change, originally partnering with Geoff Keighley's Game Awards before striking out on their own to expand the program to their entire marketplace. It's time once again for the Steam Game Festival, a massive release of hundreds of demos to hopefully introduce players to their next favorite indie game.
